The opening ceremonies of the 2006 Asian Games in Doha, Qatar featured an automated mechanical cauldron to display the Olympic Flame throughout the games. The 100 ton cauldron rose from behind the stands of Khalifa Stadium lifted by four 24 inch diameter hydraulic cylinders and then utilized a combination of hydraulics and electric motors to rotate the rings. After months of work on the fabrication of the cauldron both in the United States and Canada, I traveled to Doha for four months of installation, testing and rehearsals and stayed on as technical support through the games until the cauldron was extinguished during the closing ceremonies.
